I am pleased to have Alexis Mitchem be a guest here. She has created a platform for women to be seen and heard across the globe. Her voice is strong and will continue to push back against the barricades trying to disarm her. Here is her take on violence against women.

Let’s Discuss Violence Against Women

Living as a woman in today’s world the fear that harm will come to me is a constant thought in my mind. I must be always vigilant when I am walking to my car, interacting with persistent men, and making sure my clothes are not too presumptuous. I hate the fact that I must make sure I am always performing with responsible behavior because some men cannot respect boundaries. Women have been subjected to physical and mental forms of violence that is often overlooked. Men can get away with these behaviors because of the domineering persona that their privilege has afforded them. Even our former president Donald Trump has made vulgar comments about his disrespectful treatment of women and if the leader of the free world can get away with it who is stopping others from following suit.

Women have started to speak up more and more about sexual crimes committed against them that they were reluctant to address. There are so many rich successful male celebrities that have abused their power to take advantage of multiple women. For many years they have felt comfortable acting out violently towards women and the tolerance will no longer be brushed aside. The conversation of violence against women is finally holding certain men accountable for their actions and I believe it will change the way we value women for the future. Once we start to speak up to let women talk about the violence, they have endured we are saying that we hear you and we will not stand for this mistreatment anymore. The #MeToo movement initially started by Tarana Burke in 2006, started the conversation of speaking out about the violence women faced and offered a support system on a social platform. This movement has helped so many women regain their power and connecting with other survivors has proven that they are not alone.

Although violence against women is a difficult conversation to have, it can be affective in its prevention efforts to stop this cycle. Speaking up about any issue has always assisted with bettering society, because change must be started with someone who is brave enough to speak up. Moving forward, I believe that when we speak out about women’s issue pertaining violence can lead to discouragement for future offenders in the making. A change in the behavior in which women are treated starts with accountability from men and the responsibility that they have to control their impulses and behavior.
