The Hate U Give

The Hate U Give is a powerful book to movie adaptation about a young girl named Starr. She lives in a less fortunate neighborhood while attending school in a better off neighborhood. For most of her life she has had to switch between the two versions of herself but, it becomes hard to do so after the terrible death of her childhood friend done by a police officer. The movie follows her as she is trying to come to terms with what happened and what she should do on behalf of her friend. Her worlds are colliding and she has to choose whether to let her voice be heard or fall into the crowd.

This movie is phenomenal, I loved every second of it. It shows the heartbreaking reality of the world that we live in. Starr has been traumatized by the biases that people hold against her skin color and she was forever changed. My favorite part about watching movies is seeing the transition of the main character. Seeing Starr go from scared and not wanting to use her voice to proud and making her voice be heard was tear jerking. She builds the courage to call out her privileged friends and speak out against injustice even though it was the most terrifying thing she could have done. It is even more painful because I know that there are people out there who so badly want to use their voice but are scared and do not have the support to do it. Watching her made me feel stronger and like I could take on the injustices of the world.

I liked the color scheme of he movie. The colors are different depending on what neighborhood she is in and it reflects her feelings towards those places, it shifts your mood and perspective. The actors in the movie were well chosen. They did a great job portraying their roles but, is it really a role? They are black people living in America, where does the acting start and where does it end?

I 1000% recommend this movie for anybody and everybody. It will show you how simple microagressions and ignorance truly effect people. It will light a fire under anybody who needs a push to make their voice loud and clear. The ending will make everybody think twice about how we treat each other and how that effects the kids that we are bringing up.
