Malcolm & Marie is a breathtaking drama starring Zendaya and John David Washington. The movie is about a filmmaker and his girlfriend Marie. They just get home when little misunderstandings and details escalate and create a very hostile atmosphere for the due. The pair hash it out in an argument that seems never-ending.
Malcolm & Marie was difficult one to watch. The acting is amazing and the writing is great. It is what they say to each other that gets you so disturbed and out of your body. I felt like I was watching something that was not meant for me to see. Their conversation was so raw and intense, even down to the conversation about mac & cheese. At times I wish that I could jump through the screen and yell at them to stop.
It was very interesting watching Zendaya act in this. Being a Disney starlet she has a certain image surrounding her. Although she has been in shows like Euphoria that show a different image from the Disney image, Malcolm & Marie has completely taken her out of that category and launched her into much more mature films meant for adults.
The movie was filmed fairly quickly and in isolation due to covid. I feel they did a great job with what they had and that if there were any more characters it would ruin the trance that it put people in. The black and white image really traps you in the seriousness of everything. There are no other colors for you to look at and get distracted, you can only focus on the two people in front of you.
I enjoyed this movie, I really did. What I did not enjoy much was how some parts dragged on. I have to admit that I did zone out a couple of times. As captivating as it is, there are some parts that could be more entertaining but, that might also be the beauty of it. It feels real, like I am watching a real conversation.
I do not recommend that children watch this film, they probably do not have the attention span too but also some parts are not PG-13. It truly is a beautiful film but if someone were to ask me if they should watch it I would only suggest they do it if they love drama and would like to see Zendaya kill this role. I personally would not watch this more than twice.
